10 of the Best Shooting Sunglasses for 2021 and What You Might Want to Consider When Picking Your Running Sunglasses in 2021

What you need to Consider

Shooting

Shooting is a very eye focused sports. You need lenses for shooting that take into account a number of factors including, type of shooting, light conditions, target, background and personal preference. To enhance visual performance and comfort, shooting sports require lenses that increase visibility of targets, dampen backgrounds, ease eyestrain and fatigue, and provide protection from harmful sunlight.

Below we have provided advice on selecting the best sunglasses for shooting and our recommended top 10 sunglasses ranges for 2021 based on their excellent performance and reliability. Typically lightweight and strong, with excellent optical qualities and performance coated lenses, the brands are trusted and worn by the Pros. Only the highest standards are good enough, and you should expect the best.

Key Frame Considerations for Shooting Sunglasses:

Frame Features

  • Wrap around frame - 6 or 8 base curved frames (curved and highly curved lenses respectively) provides protection against the elements and a wide field of vision.
  • Lightweight- It's a good idea to have them as lightweight as possible this isn't necessary but just adds to your overall comfort.
  • Anti-slip nose pads - Help stop your sunglasses sliding down your nose when you are moving your head.
  • Adjustable Nose Pads - They help to keep the frames secure on your face and prevent them from sliding down your nose.
  • Anti-Slip Temples - Incorporates non slip components, helping to keep the frame securely on your face.
  • Removable Retaining Strap - Neoprene band and velcro strap provides greater comfort and security in adventure and impact sports. If your first pick frame doesn’t include a headband (or if you would like a different type) you can CLICK HERE and buy one.

Key Lens Considerations for Shooting Sunglasses:

Lens Tints

  • 100% UV protection - For protection from UV radiation
  • Polarised - Polarised lenses are ideal for rough shooting. These give enhanced definition, vital for maximum visual performance and safety. They also cut out the horizontal glare which is useful for looking into a bright sky.
  • Interchangeable Lenses - This allows you to have different tints and category so you can change your lenses depending on your environment
  • Anti-Reflective (AR) Lenses - Applied to the front or back surface of a lens, AR provides better visual acuity to judge distances and improves accuracy.

Best Lens Colours to Consider for Shooting Sunglasses:

Tint Features
  • Grey - Grey is a grey all round lens for colour. It give you the most true to life colour balance. Its ideal for bright conditions.
  • Brown - A brown tint is an all-purpose lens used in bright sunny situations. Good for outdoor target shooting against bright open backgrounds
  • Blue - Blue is commonly used in the shooting range with a backdrop of trees. These colour contribute to improving contrast, particularly again green (trees/ grass) and orange (the target), keeping your eyes focused on the target.
  • Red/ Rose - Red/ Rose lenses are most commonly used for shooting in average or bright sunlight. Best for orange, green or black targets against a green or cluttered background such as trees. Will also help to maximise contrast in flat light. Ideal for woodland shooting.
  • Orange/ Amber - Orange/ Amber are the most commonly used colours for clay target shooting. They block nearly all blue light for superior contrast. Provides good target enhancement against sky and foliage. Best for overcast to average sun conditions. Orange polarised lenses enhance orange targets and improve contrast, and are generally used for sooting against an open or uncluttered background.
  • Yellow - Yellow is used only in overcast, hazy or night conditions. Usually used with orange targets against varied backgrounds. Yellow is used by hunters in low light conditions (dawn or dusk).
  • Clear - Will provide protection when shooting in poor light conditions.

Prescription Lens Considerations for Shooting Sunglasses:

  • Polycarbonate / NXT - Always choose an impact resistant lens material for sports especially cycling this will stop the impact of any loose stone that may flick up into your eyes. polycarbonate and NXT are both great options to choose. NXT is clearer, strong and has better clarity than polycarbonate but is not available for all sunglasses and high prescriptions.
  • Photochromic - These lenses will change colour with the light, becoming darker in bright sunlight, and lighter in an overcast sky. They avoid you having to change lenses or sunglasses in different light conditions as they will adjust to providing you with the optimum vision for the light available.
  • Crystal Vision Coating - This includes our FREE anti-scratch coating but will at hydrophobic (like the wax coating on your car this will ensure rain rolls off your lenses), anti-reflective (this is coated front and back and will help decrease glare and reflection off the lens and easy clean/ oleophobic (this helps eliminate dust and smudges on your lenses making them easy to clean and less likely to get dirty in the first place)
  • Wrap sunglasses - Can select prescriptions that will fit directly into 6 base curved wrap frames or below only. For 8 base wrap frames, select one that will fit a clip-in prescription or a direct clip lens.

Tip: Anti-fog coating- This is not something we usually recommend. We only added the coating to our prescription range due to requests. Our main reason is that we do not think it off the bests value for money as our Crystal Vision as you can add an ant-fog gel but you cannot have any other coatings when you have a anti-fog coating. There are plenty of great anti-fog gels and sprays coatings CLICK HERE to choose.

(All products and brands are genuine and authentic. All prescription lenses are made in UK to EU rules and regulations and safety standards. We also check all frames and prescriptions before leaving our practice to ensure they meet your requirements.)
