10 Best Diving Sunglasses

What you need to Consider

Diving2

Your mask is possibly one of the most important pieces of your diving equipment so getting the right mask is paramount. Being able to see properly under water is not only great to see marine life (one of the reasons you're diving) but it is vital for being able to see hand signals, reading your dive computer and other gauges when scuba diving.

Below we have provided advice on selecting the best goggles and our recommended top 10 goggles ranges for 2021 based on their excellent performance and reliability. Typically lightweight and strong, with excellent optical qualities and performance coated lenses, the brands are trusted and worn by the Pros. Only the highest standards are good enough, and you should expect the best.

How to choose a mask:

How to choose a mask

PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) state that the following are key features to consider are:

  • A comfortable skirt with a close fit against your face and a good seal.
  • Nose pocket to make equalising your ears easier.
  • Low profile increases field of vision and requires less air to equalise it and to clear it of water.
  • Adjustable strap that can be locked in place.
  • Wide field of vision that can be gained from either lower profile or a wraparound design.

Prescription Considerations for your Diving Mask:

We shouldn’t have to tell you this but diving is the one sport that is completely dependant on your vision. Not just for safety but for your complete enjoy of the sport. Diving is essentially a beautiful tour of the ocean floor and if you can’t see it all in HD why are you there. As a diver who went diving with someone who missed the most incredible experience of seeing an Octopus hunt because the Octopus Camo was so subtle all he could see was coral and sea bed now is not the time to second guess whether you need a prescription.

There are 3 types of prescription types you can choose from depending on your need/use/prescription

Diving Prescription
  1. Stick on Bifocals

This is a just add water stick-on-bifocal that help to magnify your reading. Made out of an Aspheric polymer, this is for the diver who can see long distance but just needs a little boost in order to read their dive computer and gauges.

  • Designed for all diving masks - It can be trimmed to size and position on your dive mask wherever is most comfortable for you.
  • Large 1.6 inch in diameter for increased field of vision

  1. Clip In

This can be made to your exact prescription and is slightly more cost effective for those who do not dive as often but needs a prescription lens in order to get the most out of their experience. It is made exactly to your prescription you can choose Single Vision/Bifocal and Varifocal on request.

Recommended:

  • Polycarbonate / NXT - Always choose an impact resistant lens material for sports this will ensure your lenses are stronger then your usually glasses and can withstand the impact. Polycarbonate and NXT are both great options to choose. NXT is clearer, strong and has better clarity than polycarbonate but is not available for all sunglasses and high prescriptions.
  • Crystal Clear Coating (our most recommend coating*) - This includes our FREE anti-scratch coating but will at hydrophobic (like the wax coating on your car this will ensure rain rolls off your lenses), anti-reflective (AR) (this is coated front and back and will help decrease glare and reflection off the lens and easy clean/oleophobic (this helps eliminate dust and smudges on your lenses making them easy to clean and less likely to get dirty in the first place).

Tip: Anti-fog coating- This is not something we usually recommend. We only added the coating to our prescription range due to requests. Our main reason is that we do not think it off the bests value for money as our Crystal Vision as you can add an ant-fog gel but you cannot have any other coatings when you have a anti-fog coating. There are plenty of great anti-fog gels and sprays coatings CLICK HERE to choose.

  1. Direct to Mask

This is directly fitted into the mask thus giving you the widest field of vision for the diver who is diving often and needs a prescription lens in order to get the most out of the dive. Available with Single Vision and Bifocal depending on your needs.

  • Mineral Lenses - Made from toughened glass (mineral) these prescription lenses will provides exceptional scratch resistance and excellent optical clarity compared to other lenses. Most diving lenses are made from this material.

Recommended:

  • Anti-Fog Gel/Spray -  There are no coatings available for mineral lenses but if you are worried about fogging (and the spit and sea water method isn’t working for you) you can get an Anti-fog gel or spray which will help eliminate fog. CLICK HERE to buy.
